When our brew crew got wind of an employee crab feast at the brewery, brewer Ryan Yeardon (pictured) and cellarman BJ Pagnotta decided to do what they do best: Make a beer!

Using our pilot brewing system, they created (and named it themselves) Toe Pincher Golden Ale — the perfect complement to steamed Maryland Blue Crabs. Toe Pincher is a cross between a Kolsch and an American IPA. They played around with hops that are new to us here at Flying Dog and the result is delicious.

Since this is for (ahem) internal consumption only and will not be released this year, we thought we’d share the ingredients for our homebrewing friends:

  • Malt: 2-Row Pale, CaraPilsner, Biscuit, Flaked White Wheat
  • Hops: Super Galena, Bravo, Delta
  • Yeast: California Ale

So how does it pair with some Old Bay-smothered beauties? Our employee crab feast is tonight, so follow us on Twitter for our thoughts!

Join us to celebrate the release of Table for Two, “A Maryland Collaboration for the Ages” between Flying Dog Brewery and The Brewer’s Art, on Monday, June 27. The party starts at 4 pm at The Brewer’s Art in Baltimore.

A tribute to Belgian-Style table beers and Maryland’s agricultural roots, Table for Two is augmented with Westmalle yeast and brewed with local wildflower honey. It will be on draft at The Brewer’s Art and we’ll have our brewers on hand Monday to talk about the concept, recipe development process, test batches, and more.

Honest Abe has an announcement to make…tours are back!

Flying Dog Brewery tours return starting July 1.

Tours will be offered every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Each intimate session will include a history of Flying Dog, an in-depth tour of the brewery — including the brew house, cellar, quality assurance lab, and packaging areas — as well as samplings and sensory explorations of some of the 18 draft beers available at any given time.

We haven’t offered public tours since December 2009, when we placed a self-imposed hiatus to focus on updating Maryland beer sampling laws. Drafting legislation and forming a coalition of other Maryland breweries, retailers and wholesalers, we embraced our Gonzo spirit and took an active role to update some outdated laws to better reflect the climate of craft beer in the state.

Those updates unanimously passed and were signed by the Governor to go into effect July 1.

The revisions allow consumers to sample a broader range of beer styles and enable them to purchase beer “to go” after a tour. You can now purchase up to 288 ounces of beer (equivalent to four 6-packs) to be consumed off premise.

Tours are $5 and include a commemorative tasting glass. Our gift shop will also be open with a full range of Flying Dog merchandise available for purchase.

We’ve teamed up with The Brewers Art in Baltimore for Table for Two — a beer that is being billed as “A Maryland Collaboration for the Ages.”

We started working closely with The Brewers Art on a recipe in March and landed on a beer that pays homage to the traditional table beers that have existed in Belgium for centuries. Table for Two will be a variation on the old world style with unique added ingredients like honey.

“We look to do collaborations in instances where it’s clear we will grow and learn from the partnership,” Flying Dog Brewmaster and COO Matt Brophy explained. “We have always had great admiration for The Brewers art and their beers. It was clear that working closely with them gave us the opportunity to try some new things and break the rules as well, which we always enjoy doing.”

Table for Two will be available at the beginning of July in 6-packs of 12 oz. bottles and on draft in Maryland, Washington, DC, and Virginia.

For the past few years, we’ve been proud supporters of Baltimore’s Charm City Roller Girls. Simply saying that we’re sponsors makes us feel rough, tough, and ready to rumble.

Though none of us will be donning pads and skates anytime soon, Charm City bouts are a blast, especially with our Doggie Style Classic Pale Ale and In-Heat Wheat Hefeweizen on draft.

Their next bout is this Saturday from 5:30 to 10:30 pm at DuBurns Arena in Baltimore. The home team bout is between the Speed Regime and the Night Terrors and the title bout is a face-off between the Charm City All Stars and the Gotham City Roller Derby All Stars. Get your tickets through the Charm City Roller Girls website.

Come out and support your local roller girls (and your local brewery, while you’re at it).

Flying Dog is proud to support the Charles Street Friday Market, which debuted Friday, May 20 in Baltimore.

The weekly market will be held throughout the summer on the block of Lanvale Avenue (between Charles Street and Maryland Avenue).  The space will host an open air market boasting several of the areas top natural farmers and artisanal food producers. But that’s not all. A team of local chefs will be working with the farmers to create prepared foods to enjoy as you peruse the market. Plus, local artists will sell their work in “Art Ally” and there will be live music, DJ’s, and of course world class beer brought to you by yours truly.

A first of its kind, the Friday Market will allow both residents and commuters from the metro area to pick up fresh local meats, vegetables, flowers, and other items to take home and enjoy over the weekend.

A portion of all proceeds will go to benefit the League of Dreams, an organization that assists children with mental and physical disabilities by providing opportunities for them to play baseball and softball in a safe and supportive environment.

Great food, great music, great beer, and a great cause — every Friday. Support local creativity with your local brewery!
