Calling all local hops.

We are inviting all mid-Atlantic hop growers to the first (and soon-to-be annual) Maryland Hop Selection next Monday, August 26 at Flying Dog Brewery.

Each year, we use local hops in Secret Stash Harvest Ale, a celebration of local agriculture and a reflection of each year’s crop. This year, we’re taking the hop industry in the mid-Atlantic to the next level with an official hop selection lead by our Brewmaster Matt Brophy and his team of brewers. 

All amounts are welcome, but all hops must be dried in order to be considered. Selection involves Matt and our brewers cutting into dried, compressed hops, rubbing the cones between their hands, and smelling the aromatics of the hops. Submissions will be anonymously labeled, with feedback given to each farmer at the end of selection.

Full disclosure: This beer came to fruition because we saw a gap in our portfolio and we wanted to increase our market share. 

Sometimes the truth hurts. But most often, it’s damn refreshing. 

The Truth Imperial IPA — the latest addition to our year-round portfolio — is a hop bomb of some of the most distinct Pacific Northwest varietals available to craft brewers today.

In fact, three years of crafting our Single Hop Imperial IPAs with some of the most rare and flavorful hop varieties enabled us to craft this bold, yet balanced Imperial IPA. Its sharp hop bitterness begins with huge pine notes on the nose, which evolve into bright citrus and subtle stone fruit flavors.

Hours before their May 25 show at Flying Dog, of Montreal filled a firkin of Snake Dog IPA and hand-selected special ingredients for the cask, which will be tapped at The Brewer’s Art on Saturday to celebrate “fugitive air,” the first single from their new album lousy with sylvianbriar.

lousy with sylvianbriar was recorded in front man Kevin Barnes’ home studio on a 24-track tap machine, rejecting modern computer recording methods.

“I knew I wanted the process to be more in line with the way people use to make albums in the late 60s and early 70s,” Barnes told us. “I wanted to work fast and to maintain a high level of spontaneity and immediacy. I wanted the songs to be more lyric-driven, and for the instrumental arrangements to be understated and uncluttered.”

Barnes’ back-to-basics approach to this new album coupled with the band’s involvement in the traditional cask ale process showcases how both art forms – music and craft beer – go hand in hand.

The listening party will begin at 8 pm and feature giveaways of the new album, along with copies of David Barnes’ – Kevin’s brother and of Montreal art director – book, What’s Weird. For the cask, the members of of Montreal chose Galaxy and Sorachi Ace hops, which will provide bright tropical fruit, citrus, and herbal notes to the already-hop-heavy Snake Dog IPA.

When in the course of beer production, it becomes necessary for one brewery to dissolve the regulations which have disconnected growlers with the people, and to assume among the powers of the beer, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Maryland entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of our craft beer brethren requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. 

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all beer drinkers are created equal, that they are endowed by their palate with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and a growler from your local brewery.

Let it be known that the first day of July in the year two thousand and thirteen shall be known, from that day forth, as Growler Independence Day. 

After July 1, regular growling filling hours are: 

  • Thursdays* and Fridays: 4 to 8 pm
  • Saturdays: noon to 5 pm


* The brewery will be closed Thursday, July 4 for that other Independence Day. 




Last year, the State of Maryland unanimously passed legislation establishing farm breweries, which feature estate-grown ingredients in their beer. 

This weekend, Maryland’s first farm brewery, Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm, will open its doors. 

Stillpoint Farm was the first farm to commercially grow hops in the State of Maryland since the late 1800s. Owner Tom Barse — a former lawyer, current high school teacher, and homebrewer for over 30 years — was key in establishing farm brewery legislation and has provided local hops for our Secret Stash Harvest Ale for the past three years.  

Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm’s opening is not only a huge step for Maryland craft beer, but also an incredible advancement for the state’s agriculture industry. We hope you’ll join us on this beautiful Mt. Airy farm this weekend and raise a glass to this momentous occasion.

With a homebrewer on his staff, Senator Ben Cardin said he thinks he drinks more craft beer than anyone else in the Senate. 

And with a Doggie Style Pale Ale in hand, Sen. Cardin toured our brewery today as part of his “Made in Maryland” tour of companies that are supporting jobs in Maryland. After the tour, he hosted a roundtable discussion with Frederick County small business owners, including members of the Brewers Association of Maryland, in our taproom. 

A member of the Senate Finance and Small Business committees, Sen. Cardin is also the sponsor of the Small Brewer Reinvestment and Expanding Workforce Act (Small BREW Act). The bill, which 26 other Senators have co-sponsored, would reduce the excise tax on small brewers, which has not been updated since 1976.

Craft breweries, like Flying Dog, are small, independent businesses that employ almost 110,000 employees nationwide and generate more than $3 billion in wages and benefits per year. However, we pay more than $2.3 billion per year in business, personal, and consumption taxes.

Here in Maryland, the state’s 29 craft breweries paid a total of $213,267,800 in taxes last year after $94,899,800 of economic contributions to the state. 

An economic impact study by Dr. John Friedman at Harvard University found that the Small BREW Act would generate $183.1 million in economic activity in the first year and create nearly 5,230 jobs nationwide.

Sen. Cardin said overall tax reform in the House of Representatives is necessary for the Small BREW Act to have a chance in the upcoming legislative session. We urge you to contact your representatives and encourage them to support tax reform in the name of the Small BREW Act
