“Good People Brew Good Beer.”

Stove Toppers are a series of all-grain homebrew kits for advanced homebrewers. The recipes and ingredients are straight from our brewhouse and scaled-down to fit your home brewery.

We’re releasing six kits next year and they’ll be available on the first Friday of every other month. These kits are for sale exclusively at the brewery and at the Flying Barrel Homebrew Supply Shop here in Frederick.

Can’t wait until then? A kit for Barrel-Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter is available now through December 31

Just when we thought our homage to the Good Doctor couldn’t get any more deep, dark, and mysterious, our genius team of brewers aged it for months in bourbon barrels, imparting vanilla oakiness and subtle whiskey warmth on this already-complex beer.

Now, you can brew this rare find for yourself with our Stove Topper homebrew kit for Barrel-Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter

Stove Toppers are a series of all-grain homebrew kits for advanced homebrewers. They include our exact ingredients and brewmaster’s recipe, all scaled down for your 5-gallon home brewery.

The Barrel Aged-Gonzo Stove Topper is $65 and on sale through December 31 in our gift shop and select area homebrew shops.

When you make a donation to a charity, sometimes it’s tough to see the immediate impact. For oyster restoration in the Chesapeake Bay, drinking Pearl Necklace Oyster Stout and eating farm-raised oysters (like Rappahannock River Oysters) directly enables the Oyster Recovery Partnership to replant oysters back into one of the most endangered habitats on the planet.

Since its release in 2011, proceeds from Pearl Necklace have enabled ORP to plant 2 billion oysters in the Bay. Watch the impact in action:

Gonzo 3 liter

When Hunter S. Thompson died in 2005, we paid tribute the only way it knew how: A beer.

Gonzo is a deep, dark, and rich Imperial Porter with notes of chocolate, roast, and a swift kick of hop bitterness at the end – the latter something we knew the Good Doctor would appreciate.

And Ralph Steadman, Hunter’s partner in crime and pursuit of the American Dream, followed suit with a now-iconic illustration of a cigarette-smoking skeleton proclaiming “OK, let’s party,” which adorns each bottle of Gonzo Imperial Porter to this day.

Now, we’ve teamed up with our longtime label artist, who is 77 years old, on limited-edition double magnums (3-liter bottles) of Barrel-Aged Gonzo Imperial Porter signed by Ralph himself.

Typically released once a year in 750-ml bottles in extremely limited supply, Barrel-Aged Gonzo is six months in the making, with the finished beer aged for a minimum of three months in oak whiskey barrels. The result is an even more complex flavor profile with vanilla notes from the oak and subtle and soothing whiskey warmth.

Only 100 double magnums were produced and signed by Ralph. Each bottle is sealed in wax and comes in a custom-fitted wooden display box branded with the Flying Dog logo. A numbered certificate of authenticity and pair of Flying Dog goblets are also included with each bottle.

These collector’s items are $500 each and on sale now exclusively at the Flying Dog Brewery gift shop*. All of the proceeds benefit The Gonzo Foundation, a nonprofit organization created to promote literature, journalism, and political activism through the legacy of Hunter S. Thompson. It was established by Hunter’s wife, Anita Thompson, and is based at Owl Farm in Woody Creek, Colorado.

* Due to Maryland state laws, we are unable to ship. Limit one per person.

We’ve teamed up with The Single Hop Project to announce our 2014 Single Hop Imperial IPAs through their kick ass artwork, which encourages a better understanding of hops and the distinct ways they can influence beer. Their visual interpretations of some of our favorite varietals will be on display at our brewery this Saturday night

First up, we’ve got El Dorado in January:

Our November Brewhouse Rarities release, Vineyard Blonde, debuts on draft at the brewery tonight from 5 to 7 pm.

Our third agricultural collaboration of the year, Vineyard Blonde was brewed with 500 gallons of Vidal Blanc young wine from Breaux Vineyards in Purcellville, Virginia. What do we mean by young wine? As soon as grapes are harvested and pressed, they begin a natural fermentation that was halted once the juice was added to the beer during fermentation.

Vineyard Blonde is a light Belgian Golden Ale with a fruity and floral nose that continues in the flavor profile, melding with hints of white grape, honey, and biscuit malt sweetness. The combination of a Belgian yeast strain for primary fermentation and a champagne yeast strain for secondary fermentation makes the beer finish light, dry, and spritzy.

Here are some specifics:

  • 6.4% ABV
  • 25 IBU
  • Specialty malts: Torrified wheat, Aromatic malt
  • Hops: Nelson Sauvin

On a crisp late September morning, we participated in the Vidal Blanc harvest at Breaux’s 404-acre estate, which has over 100 acres of 18 different grape varieties planted.

VB 1

Breaux is Virginia’s largest producer of Vidal Blanc grapes and maintains a year-round vineyard crew that nurtures the vines and fruit every step of the way.

VB 2

Our brewers (including brewmaster Matt Brophy) worked closely with Breaux’s winemaker David Pagán Castaño throughout the planning, harvesting, and brewing process.

VB 3

The Vidal Blanc grapes were pressed and delivered to our brewery within 24 hours of being harvested.

In addition to our Vineyard Blonde release tonight, Breaux will have the beer on tap at their vineyard on Saturday, November 16. You can also use our Beer Finder to locate it on tap near you

Choosing from the most rare and interesting varieties, our genius team of brewers released four Single Hop Imperial IPAs in 2013, including Simcoe, which imparts a distinct pine aroma and in-your-face hop bitterness.

Now, you can brew the hop bomb for yourself with our Stove Topper homebrew kit for Single Hop Imperial IPA with Simcoe

Stove Toppers are a series of all-grain homebrew kits for advanced homebrewers. They include our exact ingredients and brewmaster’s recipe, all scaled down for your 5-gallon home brewery.

A key mechanism of evolution, Natural Selection is one of the cornerstones of modern biology and now, Maryland craft beer.

Our collaboration with Evolution Brewing Company began with Genus One, a stock ale with caramel and brown fruit notes mingling with hints of roast, chocolate, and toast.

Then, a common descent occurred as each brewery brewed a second batch, creating Genus Two and Three:

  • Genus Two: Brewed by Evolution and aged in oak bourbon barrels, available on draft and in 750 ml bottles
  • Genus Three: Brewed by Flying Dog and dry-hopped with Galaxy hops, available on draft and in 6-packs

All three versions will debut on draft tomorrow at Columbia Alehouse.

Then, we’re hosting a Natural Selection happy hour and beer dinner with Evolution at Birroteca on October 22  for Baltimore Beer Week.
